Press Release 09.07.20: Konstmuseet i Norr to reopen
On 21 July, Norrbotten’s County Art Museum opens the doors to the long-awaited exhibition Kiruna Forever. The exhibition has been created in collaboration with ArkDes, Sweden’s National Centre for Architecture and Design in Stockholm, and examines urban transformation through both archival material and new original works by artists from Norrbotten, Sápmi and across the world.
The artists are the Norrakollektivet (Anja Örn, Fanny Carinasdotter, Tomas Örn), New Mineral Collective (Emilija Škarnulytė, Tanya Busse), Territorial Agency (Ann-Sofi Rönnskog, John Palmesino), Iwan Baan, Anne Dessing and Michiel van Iersel as well as Joar Nango.
“Now that it is possible to open the museum again, it feels very good that we have been able to reschedule Kiruna Forever so that we can open the exhibition to our visitors, Kiruna residents and homecomers,” said Norbotten’s County Art Museum Director Selma Green.
After being closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, Norrbotten’s County Art Museum is now opening back up on two of the four floors, as the property owner, Kiruna municipality, has indicated that repair work needs to be done on the premises. The exhibition Röster från Arktis (Voices from the Arctic) was scheduled to be open in parallel with Kiruna Forever, but the museum has been forced to cancel this exhibition due to a water leak on the two upper floors.
“It would have been a wonderful exhibition, and it is very unfortunate that we had to cancel it, but we also need to face facts and our landlord needs time to fix the problems with the building,” Selma Green concludes.
A press kit with information about the exhibition Kiruna Forever will be available and the press viewing of the exhibit will be held before the opening. Information on measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread will be published on the website.
